The start of the new year can be an exciting, yet stressful, time for seniors in high school as they go through the college decision-making process. Between campus visits, financial aid applications, last minute essays and interviews, not to mention attending high school classes and studying for exams, it can certainly be daunting. Yet, the future possibilities and new experiences can make it all worth it.
When I collaborate with patients going through this process, I emphasize strategies that I believe can help reduce their anxiety.
- First, target the fear around making the “wrong decision”. This fear can be paralyzing and worsen mood, the ability to focus and pay attention, and cause irritability. By realizing that you are likely choosing between multiple good options, the worry about how this decision will affect future educational and career aspirations can lessen.
- The major differences usually come down to comfort and fit, which can be influenced by many factors, including campus size, proximity to home, friends who are also attending, and support services available on campus. I encourage patients to visit the schools and get a sense of the atmosphere and whether they feel comfortable being there.
- If you didn’t get accepted into your “dream school”, remember that multiple schools can still give you the pathway to achieving your goals. This may also include attending your local community college, which can give you great experience in attending classes, getting accustomed to a college schedule, exploring potential majors, and lead to substantial cost savings, as well.
- It’s important to practice self-care by getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet and continuing to engage in activities you enjoy. By doing so, you can help relieve stress and improve your ability to stay focused on your daily tasks.
- While deadlines can certainly be stressful, remember that you can still take short breaks to help you recover.
- Utilize your support system, including friends, family and counselors. Many of them have likely gone through the same process in the past and can offer excellent advice and comfort during this period.
- The student counseling services available at a university can be a valuable resource. I recommend students familiarize themselves with these services at any school they are considering.
Remember that the college application process reflects a major accomplishment of your life. You and your family have worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and it is a major step forward. Despite the stressors that can come with it; by keeping these strategies and others in mind, you will be able to get through it. Additionally, professional mental health services are available to provide greater support, as well, and I encourage students to utilize them when feeling overwhelmed. Best of luck to all applicants!
